If you’ve ever flick through a fashion magazine in recent years you would have noticed a proliferation of images that have a particular look but you couldn’t quite put a finger on what was different about it.

There seems to be no directional shadows you can see, but only a halo effect around the subject. The skin tones appear to glisten and shine. How do they do that?

Well the answer is the Ring flash. Ring flash? Aren’t those used for photographing macro subjects such as insects, frogs etc, not the likes of slinky models in the latest edition of Vogue. Anyway how would they have enough power to light a full length portrait?

In that case you’re probably thinking of the macro ringflash typically used for close-ups and is what most people think of when you mention the term. The other variety has a much larger power output, enough to light a full pose. These also go by the same name hence is where the confusion starts. These used to be the sole reserve of professional fashion photographers but recently however, we have seen the development of ring flash adaptors that fit over conventional flashguns and turn them into a ringflash that sits between the macro type and fully fledge pro units.

What will you do if you see red itchy patches on your body? It may be a case of ring worm infection. It may sound bad, but it can be cured easily with over-the-counter ringworm treatment.

Ringworm is a common skin infection caused by a fungus. The fungi feeds on the dead cells of skin and hair causing a ring of irritated itchy skin that looks like a worm. This may cause a rash and becomes sore. It may appear as scalp ring worm, body ringworm, face ring worm or groin ringworm.

Ringworm can be cured with medication. For most people it is not necessary to consult a doctor. There are many over the counter ringworm treatments available for ring worm. There are medications taken orally or applied locally, which are effective, well-tolerated, and even considered safe.

1. Ketoconazole

Over-the-counter Ketoconazole cream and shampoo is used to treat ringworm which controls flaking, scaling and itchy scalp caused by dandruff. It slows down the growth of the fungi that cause the infection. Ketoconazole cream is applied once a day for 2-6 weeks. Over-the-counter ketoconazole shampoo is used as needed to control dandruff. Head and shoulder shampoo works well for scalp ring worm.

2. Miconazole

Miconazole, an antifungal agent, besides controlling the growth of the fungi has some antibacterial properties also. It has very minimal side effects. Micatin, miconazole nitrate cures athlete’s foot and jock itch and relieves itching, scaling, burning and discomfort.

3. Mycelex

Another over the counter ringworm treatment is Mycelex which offers a highly effective cure and is available at a reasonable price. Butoconazole nitrate, the active ingredient in Mycelex, kills the fungus known to cause the infection.

4. Selsun Blue shampoo

Selsun Blue shampoo controls scaling, flaking and itching of the scalp and functions as an over the counter treatment for dandruff. It contains aloe and moisturizers for scalp and hair. It is ideal for sensitive skin. Selsun can be used as a topical treatment for ringworm.

5. Lotrimin

Lotrimin, an antifungal agent for clotrimazole, is used for tinea (ring worm). It is easily available over-the-counter in many drug stores and supermarkets. Lotrimin Athlete’s Foot Cream provides effective relief from ringworm caused itching, burning, and cracking. It is greaseless, odorless and non-staining.

Ring worm infections of the skin can be given treatment at home with antifungal medications. It improves within 2 weeks. But most ring worm fungus need 2 to 4 weeks. The most important thing while treating ringworm is to finish the full course of medication as needed, even if the symptoms are gone. This is to prevent them from coming back again.

So don’t worry, if you notice a dark itchy thing on your skin. Start taking any of these over the counter treatments for ringworm and get cured. But remember, over the counter ringworm treatments are for the earlier stages of infection. It should not be sought when the ring worm infection is severe. Young children should always be treated for ringworm by a competent doctor.
